Storage rack limitations – Avoid overloading a storage rack

Storage Rack Limitations

Wire frame overhead garage storage racks that you suspend from the ceiling are dangerous in heavy duty applications! Additional framing must be added to the truss system in your attic. The additional framing will protect your trusses and roof when a heavy duty storage solution is desired. If the trusses cannot be accessed then you must add vertical support columns to sustain heavy loads. Trusses are only designed to support your roof, a snow load plus a safety factor. It is extremely important that you do not overload your truss system, otherwise damage may occur to your roof along with personal injury. Installing a overhead storage rack with too much weight is ill advised.

Storage Lofts

We specialize in the construction of overhead garage storage lofts for heavy duty applications. Our storage lofts are constructed from 2×6 prime Douglas fir lumber and we use heavy duty hardware. Our storage lofts are usually supported from the ground and we guarantee the best product for quality and strength. In special applications we can reinforce the truss system in your attic to provide maximum support and stability. Garage storage lofts are unique because of the large storage capacity they provide and the weight they can support (1000 pounds and more).  Your ability to hang tall and heavy items using your garage storage loft gives you added storage capability to meet your personal storage needs.

Truss Supports

I have included some photos showing the additional truss supports that can be added to your attic in special situations where a ground support post is not feasible. Truss supports enforce the trusses in your attic and distribute the weight across multiple trusses. These supports allow for heavy loads and prevent damage to your roof and trusses.
